The irony of today’s well meaning preachers is that as they try to draw people to God, they end up pushing people away.
Understand my dilemma here.
Let me also be honest, and vulnerable to criticism.
Sometimes it isn’t that I don’t bring non-believing friends to Sunday services. The last time I did, the sermon was on deliverance - with all the jargon and the spiritual hocus pocus.
Here was a friend who was ready to listen about Jesus, her second time in church AND there was hardly a smidgen of who the heck Jesus was being mentioned that day. I only recall cringing in my seat, thinking that I’d made a HUGE mistake bringing my friend to church on Sunday.
I never brought her to service again.
In fact, i never brought anyone to church after that.
Once upon a time, I too didn’t believe in Jesus or anything God or Christian. Especially Christian - because of the tardy experiences with Christians around me, i figured that i’d rather be in hell (because that’s where they said i was destined if i didn’t believe in Jesus) than in heaven with people like them.
They probably would be surprised that God obviously had another plan for me - that He wanted none to perish and that all come to repentance (change of mind).
Do we as messengers of the gospel, know what pulls the heartstrings of the Father?
Or are we forcing the gospel down mixed fear and lack, choking them with the static.
At the end of the day, I’m not here to comment on what’s the right or wrong way things should be done, or even doctrine.
But there is one desperation, existing since the day i became a princess and daughter of a Heavenly Daddy;
to see people around me, both strangers and the familiar, come into a real relationship with a God that can heal, save and everything else that He has promised in His word.
The message should be one of
faith; in our world where trust is put in things that can so easily disappoint,
hope; in our world where life seems so beyond our control,
love; in our world where it is conditional and misunderstood.
Our message should not be limited just to Christmas, Easter and Good Friday performances.
Each Sunday should be a bridge to bring people into the family.
Each Sunday should be a church without walls;
of stereotype,
of judgement,
of jargon,
where we know of the God that meets our needs - so we can can go out and meet the needs of others.
One day, I might bring church to my friend.
I’d like that very much.

Sometimes, when I've got to make a choice between life and religion, I'll always choose life...
Why? If a relationship with Christ brings life, then one without Him brings death and judgement. If religion makes one feel that way, then obviously Christ got left behind way back somewhere.
The language of life is universal and everyone is instinctively drawn to it. So when you preach about Christ Jesus, you're actually preaching life.
With Christ comes life, then comes meaning, and with meaning comes a relationship with Him which will forever be forged in and with His blood.
I hope your prayers come true, for I also yearn to see the day when church finally invites Christ inside...
Stay strong and be blessed, by the grace and love of the Lord.
"Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;"
1 Thessalonians 1:3 (King James Version)
As a preacher, your point should be at the forefront of every preacher's mind. How do we preach in such a way to build up the congregation, yet reach out also to the non-Christian in our midst? It's not an easy question to answer...however, as Andy points out, our message should always be life-focused (which is Christ-focused), communicated in a manner which people comprehend.
Practically, it means that I preach series of books more often than I preach topically. My perspective is that the teaching of the Scriptures opens up to various issues (for example, deliverance) but within a context which can be understood by all who would hear. There is a time and place to focus on topical issues, but more often than not, I find it sufficient to allow Scriptures to guide my teaching rather than the other way around.
One of my lecturers set this challenge in preaching: preach to the full range of your audience, from the child to the PhD. From a human perspective, that is an achievement; but for us, it is the work of God and it must always come back to Him and His heart.
Bless you sister.
